People’s preoccupation with products that make you look younger is not surprising when most of us can expect to live longer and have fuller more active lives in our later years. As the skin is so important a great deal of effort goes into the preparation of products including those that increase the production of collagen which is the primary protein in connective skin. Most anti aging products (collagen included) fall into the category of anti oxidants which are the body’s method of slowing down the aging process.
Probably the best known of these is vitamin C although no-one really knows just how much we should have each day. The main problem when using any product which uses vitamin C is that oxidization can occur as soon as it has contact with the air.
More stable products are now available that are almost as efficient and actually cost less to manufacture. These alternative products are not as effective as vitamin C but vitamin E and lipoic acid are anti oxidants as well and are now being used as well.
Found in human blood, vitamin E is not only an antioxidant but designed to increase the immune system and can help ward off cancer. On the other hand, the anti oxidant lipoic acid or alpha lipoic acid is necessary for energy production which keeps us alive; it is in every human cell and another function is to repair skin damage caused by the normal aging process.
The use of plants has not been overlooked either with many types able to provide essences called phytochemicals which have proved successful in anti aging skin care products. Like lipoic acid, phytochemicals help reduce the occurrence of cancers such as prostate cancer, breast and colon.
Some B-vitamins like B5, B6 and B12 are also in use for anti aging skin care products. This is a vast area that has the potential for many new products and services in time but research needs to continue.
Although current products are effective, there are still many challenges to finding better and more efficient ways to combat the effects of time. With the research that is now taking place, many people are confident that in time, more effective, cheaper methods will be discovered.
In some respects the real way ahead lies in our own hands as there are many things we can do to reduce the signs of aging naturally. For instance, regular sleep patterns, exercise, a good healthy diet and less stress will all contribute to reducing the signs of aging.
